VIENNA AND ART
As the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Vienna was a unique cultural centre, especially in art and music. It saw the birth and rise of geniuses like Franz Schubert, known for his romantic melodies, and Gustav Mahler, who gave an innovative flair to the Vienna State Opera. Johann Strauss II became a symbol of Viennese elegance thanks to his enchanting waltzes. The Burgtheater and the Vienna State Opera were lighthouses for the creative world, interweaving prose, theatre and music. This dynamic cultural scene, allied with its rich theatre history and imperial architecture, made Vienna a continuous source of inspiration for Klimt and his peers.
