SECESSIONE VIENNESE

The Life of Klimt

THE VIENNESE SECESSION

In 1897, Klimt co-founded the Viennese Secession, a revolutionary art movement that challenged academic conventions and embraced new forms of expression. The Secession was created in response to the strictness of the Viennese art institutions of the time, contrasting it by promoting artistic freedom and openness to innovation. Klimt was the first president and an emblematic figure of the movement, helping to create the famous Secession Building, among other things. The movement’s official paper, Ver Sacrum, served as a visual and conceptual manifesto for secessionist ideas.
