The Life of Klimt

ACADEMIC STUDIES

In 1876, at only 14 years old Klimt was accepted into the Vienna School of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule), where he received strict training as a decorator and painter. Here, he learned academic techniques and developed his refined style, which characterised his first works. While studying, Klimt started collaborating with his brother Ernst and his friend Franz Matsch, founding the art collective Künstler-Compagnie which was granted prestigious commissions. Some of their highlights include the decorations for the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In 1892, Klimt’s talent was consecrated when the University of Munich and the University of Vienna made him an honorary member.
